Norwegian police Inspector Harry Hole is one of my favorite characters so I was very pleased to discover The Bat, the first Inspector Harry Hole novel by Jo Nesbo had finally been released in the United States.
Harry has been sent to Australia to represent his country during the investigation of the murder of a Norwegian woman who was a minor television celebrity before heading Down Under. This being a Harry Hole story, things are not what they seem on the surface and it isn’t too long before the flawed but intrepid copper is neck deep in the hunt for what could be a serial killer.
If you already know and like Harry, The Bat is a treat as a lot of backstory that is only referred to in later books happens or is examined in detail. If you’re not already a fan of Harry …. well, you may want to start with a later book in the series, especially The Redbreast. This is a first novel, and the first of a series, and it shows a bit. Still, Harry is a great character, and all great characters start somewhere.
I greatly enjoyed The Bat and can’t wait to dig into The Redeemer, another early Harry Hole book recently released here (and waiting on my Kindle as I type this).
Note: I don’t normally spend a lot of time on reviews of traditionally published works, preferring to concentrate my efforts on the Independent Author ranks I am proud to be a part of.
