The Jewish Neighbor by A.M. Khalifa (@amkwriter) is an emotionally charged short story of Umayma, a Syrian woman who moves to London after her arranged marriage to the much older Kamal, a wealthy expatriate. The union of Umayma and Kamal is not only loveless but also marked by his emotional and physical abuse. Despite her knowledge of the language, Umayma has no one she can turn to for advice or support. Until the day she meets Felix, a man who she has been taught is evil.
Although a quick read this story packs a punch, sending the reader’s emotions on quite a rollercoaster ride. Although discomforted at times — which isn’t a bad thing — I enjoyed it very much. 5 stars.
